Nepal: Bodies of five missing climbers, including two Italians, recovered

Five climbers missing since a November 2025 avalanche in the Himalayas have been found in the Rolwaling region of Nepal, near Yalung Ri, at an altitude of approximately 5,400 meters. Among the recovered are two Italian nationals: Marco Di Marcello, a 37-year-old biologist, and Markus Kirchler. The recovery operation, conducted on Sunday, August 9, was led by local climber Phurba Tenzing Sherpa and supported by a helicopter after a window of favorable weather opened.

The victims were lost during a violent snowstorm and avalanche that struck several expeditions. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Farnesina) is currently coordinating with the Italian Consulate in Calcutta and local authorities in Kathmandu to manage the repatriation of the bodies or ashes according to the families' wishes.

Following the discovery, the family of Marco Di Marcello expressed deep distress, publicly criticizing Italian institutions for a perceived lack of support and guidance during the long months of uncertainty. The Italian diplomatic network has stated it has maintained contact with the families and local rescue agencies throughout the search efforts.
