Look Back film premieres at Venice International Film Festival

The live-action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s mangaLook Back’, directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, held its world premiere in the competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The screening was met with a standing ovation lasting over 12 minutes.

Starring Natsuki Deguchi and Aju Makita, the film follows the lives of two young artists, Fujino and Kyomoto, as they navigate their creative partnership and personal growth over thirteen years. Kore-eda, who also served as writer and editor, noted that the project was inspired by the manga’s depiction of the creative process and the emotional weight of shared labor.

To capture the essence of manga creation, the production focused heavily on sound design, recording the specific nuances of pens on paper and digital processes. The cast, including child actors Furi Nanase and Rokka Okada, participated in the red carpet event in Venice, marking a significant international milestone for the production.
