Look Back film production and international release

Overview

The live-action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, ‘Look Back’, directed, written, and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda, has commenced its theatrical run. Following its successful world premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where the screening received a standing ovation lasting over 12 minutes, the film moved into its domestic release phase in Japan on September 11, 2026.

Filmed across the changing seasons in Kahoku City, Akita Prefecture, the narrative follows a 13-year journey of two girls connected by their passion for drawing. To celebrate the production, filming sets in the region were restored with high fidelity. The production emphasizes high-quality cinematic technicality, utilizing Dolby Atmos, 4K, and 35mm film, alongside rotoscoping techniques to blend animation with live-action elements.

To coincide with the release, a limited-edition 64-page ‘Special Booklet Volume 1’ became available to moviegoers starting September 18, 2026. This booklet includes the complete 41-page version of ‘Metal Parade’, featuring storyboards, sketches, and manuscripts, alongside exclusive commentary between Tatsuki Fujimoto and Hirokazu Kore-eda.

Following its domestic launch, the film expanded its international presence. Director Kore-eda, alongside lead actresses Natsuki Deguchi and Ayame Makita, visited Taiwan to promote the film. In October 2026, the film was selected for the Gala Presentation section at the 31st Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. Following appearances at festivals in Toronto and London, GKIDS has scheduled limited theatrical screenings in the United States to begin on December 30, 2026, with a wider release on January 15, 2027.
