Museo Sorolla reopens in Madrid with 2,000-square-meter expansion

The Museo Sorolla in Madrid has partially reopened following a major expansion project. The first phase of the renovation, costing approximately 13.1 million euros, introduces over 2,000 square meters of new space located in a former Volvo workshop on Calle Zurbano.

Designed by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, the new facility includes four temporary exhibition halls, an 80-capacity auditorium, a unified warehouse for over 9,500 cultural assets, and a specialized restoration workshop. This expansion allows the museum to move internal services and technical operations out of the historic residence, improving accessibility and conservation capabilities.

While the new annex is now open to the public, the original historic house and gardens remain closed for a second phase of integral rehabilitation. Director Enrique Varela noted that the timeline for the house's reopening is uncertain, stating that the process could take years.

Separately, the Industrial and Workers' Memory Museum of Puerto de Sagunto has also opened its doors in a repurposed 1927 industrial building. The museum offers free admission until the end of 2026 and focuses on the region's steel industry and labor history.
