Spanish museum reopenings and expansions
Overview
Major Spanish cultural institutions are announcing significant reopenings and expansions. In early October 2026, the museums for painting and architecture at El Escorial reopened following a ten-year closure, offering free admission through the end of the year. During this same period, the Museo del Prado in Madrid held a special night opening featuring free entry to selected rooms.
By mid-October 2026, the Sorolla Museum in Madrid partially reopened following a major expansion and restoration project. The new facility, located in a former Volvo workshop on Calle Zurbano and designed by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, adds approximately 1,700 to 2,000 square meters of space. This phase of the renovation, costing roughly 13.1 to 14 million euros, includes four temporary exhibition halls, an 80-capacity auditorium, a specialized restoration workshop, and a unified warehouse for more than 9,500 cultural assets.
This expansion allows the museum to move internal services and technical operations out of the historic residence, improving accessibility and conservation capabilities. The reopening is marked by a temporary exhibition titled ‘Tras la casa del artista. Arquitecturas del Museo Sorolla (1905-2026)’, which explores the building's history. While the new annex is accessible, the original historic house and gardens remain closed for a second phase of integral rehabilitation. Director Enrique Varela noted that the timeline for the house's reopening is uncertain, stating that the process could take years. The expansion follows a 40% increase in museum attendance recorded in 2023.
