Historian Iván Berend dies at age 95 in Los Angeles

Renowned historian Iván Berend has passed away at the age of 95 in his home in Los Angeles. His death was confirmed by his wife, Katalin Radics.

Born in Budapest in 1930, Berend was a distinguished scholar of European economic and social history. He served as the president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 1985 to 1990 and held the position of rector at the Marx Károly University of Economic Sciences (now Corvinus University) between 1973 and 1979.

A survivor of the Dachau concentration camp during World War II, Berend's academic career spanned several decades and continents. Following his tenure in Hungary, he moved to the United States, where he taught as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1990 to 2015. He was a member of several prestigious scientific academies, including those in the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria, and Bulgaria.
