Renowned Hungarian historian Iván Berend has died in Los Angeles at the age of 95 or 96. A survivor of the Dachau concentration camp, Berend was a distinguished scholar of European economic and social history.

His career included serving as the president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 1985 to 1990 and as rector at the Marx Károly University of Economic Sciences. Following his move to the United States in 1990, he held a professorship at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and directed the Center for European and Eurasian Studies until his retirement in 2015.
