Historic Mouria cafe in Exarcheia to close after 111 years
The historic Mouria cafe, located at the intersection of Kallidromiou and Charilaou Trikoupi streets in the Exarcheia district of Athens, has announced its closure after operating continuously since 1915.
In a social media post titled ‘The Downfall’, the establishment bid farewell to its patrons. The closure follows reports that the property owner intends to repurpose the space into a pharmacy, a move that has drawn significant local opposition.
Christos Vanas, the seventh consecutive operator of the cafe, had previously attempted to have the site designated as a protected heritage site to ensure its survival. Despite a petition signed by approximately 7,500 people to preserve the cafe as part of the neighborhood's identity, the establishment is now preparing to vacate the premises.
