Closure of Mouria cafe in Athens
Overview
The historic Mouria cafe in the Exarcheia district of Athens has closed after 111 years of continuous operation since 1915. Located at the intersection of Harilaou Tripoukou and Kallidromiou streets, the establishment served as a significant cultural landmark and meeting point for generations, including residents, artists, intellectuals, and political activists.
The closure follows a dispute regarding the property, as the landlord requested the business vacate the premises to change the use of the space. While a previous attempt to change the building’s use was halted in June following public backlash, the cafe is still set to close.
Local residents and patrons mobilized to protect the site, collecting between 6,000 and 7,500 signatures in an effort to have the cafe recognized as a monument of modern cultural heritage. Despite support from the Athens Municipal Council and local professional associations, the institutional recognition process was not completed in time to prevent the closure. Christos Vanas, who has managed the cafe since 1982, expressed his desire to preserve the establishment as a piece of the neighborhood’s identity.
The closure was finalized following the non-renewal of the property lease. A large farewell gathering was held on October 31, featuring music, singing, and personal anecdotes from long-time patrons. The loss of the cafe is viewed within the context of a broader transformation of Exarcheia, which has seen a shift from traditional meeting spots toward hotels, brunch establishments, and short-term rentals. The Guardian described the cafe as the “last stronghold” of the Exarcheia district.
