Hitman confesses to assassination of journalist Susy Aponte Polo
A hitman, Luis Obispo Díaz, has confessed to a series of attempts to assassinate journalist and regional government candidate Susy Aponte Polo, known as ‘China Polo’. According to his testimony, the attempts occurred in Nuevo Chimbote and twice in Huaraz before the successful attack in Caraz, where he shot her in the head.
Obispo Díaz identified Adrián Azuaje Solís, also known as ‘José’, as the individual who contracted the killing. Azuaje Solís, a Venezuelan national, reportedly traveled to Caraz to supervise the execution and is currently a fugitive. The hitman stated he was offered 10,000 soles for the job but requested 15,000 soles.
The death toll from the September 19 attack has risen following the passing of Olimpia Avelina Pachas Osorio, a 72-year-old street vendor. Pachas was critically injured during the assault and died in an intensive care unit in Huaraz. The attack also left four other people injured. Following his medical discharge, Obispo Díaz has been transferred to police custody in Huaraz.
