Assassination of journalist Susy Aponte Polo

Overview

Luis Obispo Díaz, a hitman, has confessed to the assassination of journalist and regional government candidate Susy Aponte Polo, also known as ‘China Polo’. According to his testimony, the hitman carried out several attempts in Nuevo Chimbote and Huaraz before successfully shooting her in the head in Caraz.

Obispo Díaz identified Adrián Azuaje Solís, a Venezuelan national known as ‘José’, as the individual who contracted the killing. Azuaje Solís reportedly traveled to Caraz to supervise the execution and remains a fugitive. The hitman stated he requested 15,000 soles for the job.

The death toll from the September 19 attack has increased following the death of Olimpia Avelina Pachas Osorio, a 72-year-old street vendor who died in an intensive care unit after being critically injured during the assault. The attack also resulted in four other injuries. Following his medical discharge, Obispo Díaz has been transferred to police custody in Huaraz.
