HMP Millsike prison faces hundreds of empty cells due to staffing shortages

HMP Millsike, a modern £400 million super-prison in Yorkshire, England, currently has hundreds of empty cells due to severe staffing shortages. Although the facility has a design capacity for approximately 1,500 inmates, it is operating with a reduced capacity of around 1,158 cells because authorities deem it unsafe to house more prisoners with the current number of available officers.

Prison management reports a cycle of recruiting and training new staff who subsequently resign shortly after starting. One source described the situation as being like “a bathtub with the tap turned on full blast but the plug pulled out.” This shortage occurs despite the prison being equipped with advanced facilities, including workshops for vocational training and modern living quarters.

The vacancy at Millsike coincides with a broader crisis in the UK prison system. While the government has considered early release programs to alleviate overcrowding in older facilities, the inability to staff new sites like Millsike limits the available space. Additionally, thousands of cells across the country remain unused due to maintenance issues, fire safety upgrades, or ongoing construction in older Victorian-era prisons.
