HMRC to issue pension top-up payments to one million people

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will issue letters to approximately one million people, primarily women, regarding eligibility for pension top-up payments. These payments are intended for low earners who received less tax relief due to the use of Net Pay Arrangement pension schemes rather than Relief at Source schemes.

Eligible individuals, typically those earning close to the £12,570 income tax threshold, will be contacted automatically via letter or their online personal tax account. While payments often average around £70, the exact amount varies by circumstance. HMRC noted that they will not contact individuals via text, email, or phone regarding these payments, and will never request PIN codes, passwords, or money transfers.
