HMS Tiger shipwreck discovered after 118 years
Divers from ProjectXplore have located the wreckage of the HMS Tiger, a 400-ton British Royal Navy destroyer that sank 118 years ago. The wreck was found split into two sections approximately 200 feet below the surface in the English Channel near the Isle of Wight.
The vessel sank on April 2, 1908, following a collision with the 10,000-ton cruiser HMS Berwick during a night training exercise. The disaster resulted in the deaths of at least 35 of the ship's 57 crew members.
Archaeological findings from the site have provided clarity regarding the ship's final moments. Recovered instruments, including a rudder position indicator and a telegraph, suggest the HMS Tiger made no attempt to change course or reduce speed to avoid the collision. Other artifacts recovered from the site include a compass, torpedo tubes, cannons, ammunition, an anchor, and the ship's bell.
