Discovery of HMS Tiger shipwreck
Overview
Divers and historians from ProjectXplore have discovered the wreckage of the HMS Tiger, a British Royal Navy torpedo boat destroyer, off the Isle of Wight. The vessel sank 118 years ago in 1908 after colliding with the cruiser HMS Berwick during a night training exercise, an accident that killed more than half of the ship’s 57-strong crew.
Initial reports noted that the discovery coincided with legislative discussions regarding the UK’s Armed Forces Bill, which seeks to expand protections for military shipwrecks by designating them as ‘protected places’.
Subsequent findings from the site, located approximately 200 feet below the surface in the English Channel, provided further detail on the collision. Recovered instruments, such as a rudder position indicator and a telegraph, suggest the HMS Tiger made no attempt to reduce speed or change course to avoid the impact. Other artifacts recovered from the two sections of the wreck include a ship’s bell, torpedo tubes, cannons, an anchor, and a compass.
