HMS Tiger shipwreck discovered off Isle of Wight after 118 years
Divers and historians from the group ProjectXplore have discovered the wreck of the HMS Tiger off the Isle of Wight, 118 years after it sank. The torpedo boat destroyer was sliced in two during a night training exercise in 1908 after colliding with the cruiser HMS Berwick. The accident resulted in the deaths of more than half of the vessel's 57-strong crew.
ProjectXplore spent five years researching archives to locate the site. The discovery coincides with legislative discussions regarding the UK's Armed Forces Bill. The proposed bill aims to expand protections for military shipwrecks by designating them as “protected places,” extending safeguards beyond the current 200-year limit established by the Protection of Military Remains Act.
Royal Navy officials and ProjectXplore organizers emphasized the importance of preserving maritime heritage and honoring the memory of those lost at sea. Officials have requested that divers visit these historical sites to learn and pay respects without disturbing the remains.
