Ho Chi Minh City adds canopies linking metro stations to bus stops

Ho Chi Minh City is installing covered walkways that connect metro stations with nearby bus stops and other public venues such as schools, hospitals and markets. The first canopy was built at An Phú station, with additional structures planned for Thảo Điền, Văn Thánh Park, Đại Học Quốc Gia, Thủ Đức and Ben Thanh Market. The metal frames are 2.8 m high and 2.4 m wide, include LED lighting and passenger benches, and are slated for completion in July 2026.

City officials say the shelters will improve comfort in rain or intense sun and encourage commuters to choose public transport over private cars. “Having a roof will make travel much more comfortable, especially when I forget an umbrella,” said student Nguyễn Hà My. Another student added, “A simple covered walkway is enough to make me less hesitant to go out, giving me more motivation to use public transport instead of private cars.”
