Ho Chi Minh City commemorates 50 years since being named after President Ho Chi Minh

Vietnam marked the 50th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh City’s renaming on 2 July 2026 with a series of nationwide events and overseas promotions. In Ho Chi Minh City, fireworks lit up the sky at 16 locations, including high‑altitude sites and a 3D projection show on the People’s Committee building. Thousands gathered in parks, on Nguyen Hue Boulevard and at the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee headquarters despite heavy rain, while the city’s television network broadcast a special program from both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

Top officials, including General Secretary and President Tô Lâm, addressed the ceremony, highlighting the city’s new development opportunities after recent administrative reorganisation and urging it to become a strategic megacity. Party Secretary Trần Lưu Quang and other leaders also spoke about the city’s historic progress and future goals. Youth representative Dr Mai Ngọc Xuân Đạt delivered a speech on the responsibility of the new generation. Internationally, giant screens in Seoul displayed images promoting the anniversary, underscoring the city’s cultural and economic ties with South Korea. Private developers such as Saigon Marina IFC staged their own light‑show fireworks, adding to the city‑wide celebration.
