Ho Chi Minh City accelerates TOD planning around metro stations
Ho Chi Minh City is accelerating its Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) planning to integrate urban growth with its expanding metro and railway infrastructure. The municipal People's Council has approved a resolution to establish TOD areas, which include metro stations, depots, and surrounding zones within a maximum 1,000-meter radius.
Key developments include the approval of TOD boundaries for the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong metro line and the Thu Thiem Station complex. For the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong line, the planning dossier is expected to be submitted for approval in December, covering approximately 938 to 940 hectares. Other lines, such as the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien and Ben Thanh-Can Gio routes, are scheduled for planning reviews and approvals through 2027.
The strategy aims to create mixed-use developments combining housing, commercial services, and public amenities, with public transport serving as the primary backbone. To reduce congestion and pollution, the city is implementing a policy to reduce individual parking space targets by 50% near stations, encouraging a shift toward public transit, cycling, and walking.
