Ho Chi Minh City expands search at Le Thi Rieng Park, discovers 5 more war‑martyr remains

For more than a month, the Ho Chi Minh City Military Command has been excavating the former burial site of Vietnamese war martyrs in Le Thi Rieng Park. Five experienced excavation teams (K70‑K74) have been rotating shifts, using excavators, dewatering pumps and meticulous hand‑tools to uncover remains while protecting any artifacts.

On 30 July, workers opened a second mass‑grave trench, removing 22 m³ of soil and recovering five additional sets of skeletal remains, four of which included personal items. The latest finds raise the total recovered to 155 sets – 133 individual and 22 grouped in four collective graves. Authorities plan to relocate the memorial monument and continue expanding the excavation to the first trench and other potential sites.

The operation, led by Colonel Nguyễn Đình Chuẩn and Lieutenant Colonel Dương Xuân Hùng, involves coordination with historical experts and eyewitnesses to verify burial locations dating back to 12 February 1968. The ongoing effort underscores a commitment to honoring the fallen and preserving historical evidence.
