Ho Chi Minh City faces flooding as heavy rains persist

Intense rainfall and thunderstorms have battered Ho Chi Minh City and parts of southern Vietnam for several days, causing localized flooding on major streets such as Quốc Hương and Nguyễn Cơ Thạch. The downpours, driven by strong southwest winds and a persistent low‑pressure system, have produced rainfalls of 10‑30 mm in an hour, with some locations exceeding 50 mm, quickly inundating low‑lying areas and disrupting traffic.

Meteorologists attribute the heavy rains to a convergence of southwest monsoon flow and an El Niño‑enhanced temperature gradient, which also fuels frequent lightning and gusty winds. Forecasts predict a gradual weakening of the southwest wind convergence by 19 June, leading to reduced rain intensity, although a separate tropical low near the Philippines may trigger another broad rain band later in the month. Authorities advise residents to remain vigilant for flash flooding, strong gusts, hail and lightning until the rains subside.
