Ho Chi Minh City promotes 92,600 billion VND Can Gio - Vung Tau sea-crossing project

Ho Chi Minh City is advancing a major sea-crossing project to connect Can Gio with Vung Tau, with a preliminary investment estimated at over 92,600 billion VND. The project, proposed under a Build-Transfer (BT) public-private partnership model, aims to provide a direct link between the two regions, bypassing the need to travel through Dong Nai province.

The approximately 14 km route will feature six motor vehicle lanes with a design speed of 80 km/h. To accommodate heavy maritime traffic in the Ganh Rai Bay area, the technical design combines an 8 km bridge with a nearly 4 km tunnel system. This includes a 2.1 km immersed tunnel to ensure sufficient clearance for large international vessels.

A notable feature of the project is the construction of two artificial islands at the transition points between the bridge and the tunnel. These islands, covering a combined area of approximately 270,763 square meters, will serve as hubs for tunnel entrances, ventilation, rescue operations, and administrative infrastructure. The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the Can Gio urban area and Vung Tau from nearly two hours to approximately 10 minutes.
