Ho Chi Minh City receives US war archives to identify missing soldiers

On 9 July 2026, officials in Ho Chi Minh City accepted three sets of war records and artifacts donated by the Vietnam War Missing Persons Initiative (VWAI) at Texas Tech University in the United States. The hand‑over included documentation for three soldier relics, burial maps for 21 soldiers interred at Hospital K76A, and decoded unit‑926 files linked to recent finds at Le Thi Rieng Park.

The materials stem from more than 2.7 million pages of U.S. military archives and other U.S. sources, and are intended to support the city's "500‑day night" campaign to locate, exhume and identify unknown war dead. Vietnamese authorities, including Deputy Chairman Nguyễn Mạnh Cường and Major General Nguyễn Thành Trung, said the data will hasten verification, field surveys and the return of remains to families, noting that the artifacts are "more than historical items; they are bridges of hope for families seeking their loved ones."
