Ho Chi Minh City launches Cai Mép super‑port for 50‑year anniversary

On 5 July 2026 the International Port Corporation (QTM) held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new super‑port at Cai Mép‑Thị Vải in Ho Chi Minh City. The project, funded with about VND 50 trillion (≈US$2 billion), will be built in two phases to 2034, creating eight berths capable of handling vessels up to 250 000 DWT and targeting an annual throughput of 16 million tonnes. The port will integrate warehouses, cold storage, logistics parks and connect to highways, the Long Thanh airport and regional industrial zones, aiming to cut freight costs, generate jobs and boost municipal revenue.

Deputy Prime Minister Phạm Già Túc highlighted Vietnam’s 3 200 km coastline and the need to improve logistics efficiency, while Ho Chi Minh City Chairman Nguyễn Văn Được said the three new ports, together with the existing Cai Mép complex, will turn the city into a logistics hub for Vietnam and Southeast Asia. In parallel, the city’s Culture and Sports Department announced 11 new songs and traditional music pieces commissioned to celebrate the 50‑year anniversary of Saigon‑Gia Định, underscoring the broader cultural program accompanying the infrastructure push.
