Ho Chi Minh City uncovers 49 war dead remains at Le Thi Rieng Park

The Ho Chi Minh City Command’s burial‑remains recovery team has excavated a total of 49 individual sets of war dead and one collective burial at Le Thi Rieng Park, a former cemetery now a public park. The tally rose after the discovery of 20 additional remains on 11 July, following earlier reports of 29 remains found on 10 July.

Artifacts recovered with the remains include two gold wedding rings, a pen, a hair‑brush, rubber sandals, and other personal items that may help identify the soldiers, many of whom fought in the 1968 Tet Mau Than offensive. DNA samples have been taken from the remains and from living relatives of at least one identified soldier, Huỳnh Văn Quên of the 1st Long An Battalion, to confirm identities.

High‑ranking officials, including General Nguyễn Trọng Nghĩa, a member of the Politburo and head of the Vietnam People’s Army Political Directorate, visited the site to commemorate the fallen and to urge the continuation of the 500‑day intensive search and identification effort.
