Hokkaido advances energy and data infrastructure through Siemens investment and power applications
Hokkaido is implementing strategic measures to bolster its energy and digital infrastructure. Siemens Energy has announced plans to establish a wind power maintenance and logistics hub in Eniwa, Hokkaido, by January 2027. This facility will serve as a central base for the company’s wind power operations across Asia, including the Philippines and Vietnam. In coordination with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Siemens will also work on commercializing floating offshore wind power and developing specialized human resources in Japan.
Simultaneously, Hokkaido has launched a public tender for data center developers across six sites in Ishikari and Tomakomai. To address the challenge of securing large-scale electricity for AI-driven demand, the prefecture has proactively applied for grid connections totaling 990MW—an amount equivalent to the output of a single nuclear reactor. The initiative aims to attract private investment by pre-securing power access, which is often a significant bottleneck for large-scale digital infrastructure. The selection of preferred operators is expected to begin in early 2027.
