Hokkaido digital and energy infrastructure development
Overview
Efforts to strengthen Hokkaido’s regional infrastructure are advancing through new technical verifications and strategic energy investments. Internet Multifeed and Sakura Internet announced a project to test decentralized digital infrastructure by connecting the JPNAP Sapporo Internet Exchange with the Ishikari Data Center. This initiative aims to facilitate local data circulation and reduce reliance on Tokyo-centric networks.
Complementing these digital efforts, Hokkaido is expanding its energy capacity to support growing industrial demands. Siemens Energy plans to establish a wind power maintenance and logistics hub in Eniwa by January 2027 to support operations across Asia. To support the high electricity requirements of AI-driven data centers, the prefecture has applied for 990MW of grid connections and launched a public tender for developers at six sites in Ishikari and Tomakomai.
