Homa Bay MP calls for arrest of leaders over rally violence
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has called for the arrest and prosecution of several political leaders following violence during the August 16 Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay. The clashes resulted in two deaths, numerous injuries, and property damage.
Kaluma has accused Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna of involvement in planning and financing the unrest. He further alleged that former President Uhuru Kenyatta funded the violence and claimed that Ksh100 million was delivered to Governor Orengo shortly before the event. Kaluma also alleged that security officials were compromised, claiming a large sum was delivered to a regional police command to influence the response.
The accused leaders have denied the allegations. Babu Owino stated that his group members were attacked by goons during the rally and warned against political incitement between ethnic groups. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has condemned the violence, stating that political gatherings should not be used for intimidation or the disruption of citizens' rights.
