Overview

On August 16, 2026, violent clashes occurred in Homa Bay County during a rally organized by the Linda Mwananchi movement. The unrest, involving armed groups using machetes and stones, resulted in at least two deaths—including a police driver—and 46 injuries. Media personnel were also targeted, with reports of equipment theft and physical assaults on journalists.

In the aftermath, political tensions escalated. Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i accused the current administration of having prior knowledge of the violence, while Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga denied claims that goons were being mobilized for disruption.

By August 18, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma called for the arrest and prosecution of several political leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo and MP Babu Owino, alleging they were involved in planning and financing the unrest. Kaluma further alleged that security officials were compromised. The accused leaders have denied these allegations, with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) condemning the violence and calling for the protection of citizens' rights.
