Hombre y Territorio develops efficient Posidonia replanting system
Scientists and the association Hombre y Territorio are developing a more efficient method to replant Posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean Sea. These seagrass meadows act as vital underwater forests, supporting biodiversity and capturing significant amounts of CO2 to combat climate change.
Traditional restoration efforts have been slow and difficult, often involving the individual placement of seagrass bundles, which leaves them vulnerable to currents, waves, and sedimentation. The new approach involves planting circular patches containing dozens of bundles at once. These patches are fixed to the seabed in areas where previous meadows have died, aiming to increase the success rate of artificial recovery efforts.
