Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica restoration efforts
Overview
Efforts to restore Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean Sea are advancing through new technological and localized conservation initiatives.
In Spain, scientists and the association Hombre y Territorio are developing a more efficient replanting method. Rather than the traditional, slow process of placing individual bundles, this new approach utilizes circular patches containing dozens of bundles fixed to the seabed to improve survival rates against currents and sedimentation.
In Italy, the ‘Green Sea’ project has commenced in the Baia di Ieranto within the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area. This initiative seeks to repair seabed habitats degraded by historical boat anchoring. In collaboration with the International School for Scientific Diving and the University of Genoa, divers have installed biodegradable mats and approximately 2,000 cuttings to begin restoring the vegetation.
