Home Minister Amit Shah launches 7 million‑tree plantation drive in Delhi
On 7 July 2026, India's Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Delhi government's ambitious 70 lakh (7 million) tree‑planting campaign. The initiative, organised by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), will run across 34 locations under a “mega plantation” program.
NDMC Vice‑Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said the plan targets the planting of 600 trees and 50,000 ornamental shrubs, with more than 50,000 planting pits already prepared. Species to be used include native trees such as peepal, neem, jamun, amla, champa, ashoka, gulmohar and amaltas, plus decorative shrubs like hibiscus, justicea and lily. All NDMC staff, department heads, officials and employees will take part, alongside resident welfare associations, market traders' groups, schools and local communities. Chahal highlighted that NDMC currently maintains about 1,450 acres of green areas, accounting for roughly 55 % of Delhi’s urban canopy, making it one of the country’s greenest municipal bodies.
