Delhi urban greening efforts continue
Overview
Following the June approval of a 26.46‑km metro corridor that required transplanting about 3,000 trees, the Delhi Development Authority reported planting more than 662,000 saplings—over 37,000 trees and 625,000 shrubs—reaching roughly 30 % of its 2.3‑million‑sapling target for the Mega Plantation drive that runs until mid‑September 2026. A newly‑formed Knowledge Forum on Plantation and Greening, bringing together government agencies, NGOs and private partners, now provides scientific guidance to strengthen Delhi’s green infrastructure.
The New Delhi Municipal Council kept its weekly “One Tree for Mother” drives alive, hosting the 33rd event on 19 July at the Women’s Technical Institute in Netaji Nagar. Vice‑President Kuljeet Singh Chahal led the ceremony, highlighting collaborations with universities, embassies and other institutions and emphasizing the need for regular maintenance, inspection and protection of the newly planted trees.
On 18 July the DDA reiterated that the 662,000 saplings planted are part of the “Ek Ped Maa ke Naam” campaign, stressing the use of native, climate‑resilient species to improve air quality, carbon sequestration and groundwater recharge. Experts cautioned that large‑scale planting must be paired with sustainable mobility and active citizen participation.
A single‑day plantation drive on 31 July, led by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, saw more than 100,000 native trees and shrubs placed at 77 sites across Delhi, including the Kamla Nehru Ridge. Around 200 participants—students, residents, and doctors from the Delhi Medical Association—joined the effort. Sandhu directed the DDA to make such drives regular and appointed nodal officers to monitor sapling survival, linking the event to a year‑long plan to plant 7 million trees.
The campaign, launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, continues to focus on biodiversity, micro‑climatic regulation, habitat creation and overall urban livability, while officials urge long‑term care and public involvement to turn the mass‑plantation effort into a lasting green movement.
