Spain sees sharp rise in electricity and fuel costs in June 2026

On June 29, 2026 the wholesale price of electricity in Spain surged to 144.96 €/MWh during the 21:00‑22:00 hour, making that slot the most expensive of the day. The average price for the day was 83.51 €/MWh, up 25.66 % from the previous day. A similar spike was recorded the day before, with the market price at 66.46 €/MWh.

Households on the regulated PVPC tariff faced a daily average of 0.0994 €/kWh on Sunday 28 June, with the cheapest hour between 13:00‑14:00 at 0.01994 €/kWh and the most expensive hour between 22:00‑23:00 at 0.18057 €/kWh.

In parallel, gasoline prices varied by station and region. The Ministry’s geo‑portal reported average prices of €1.47 / l for 95‑octane, €1.62 / l for 98‑octane and €1.54 / l for diesel on the same Monday. Some chains such as Costco and Alcampo offered lower rates, while others like Repsol remained above the national average.

The upcoming expiry of the temporary 10 % VAT rate on fuels on 1 July adds uncertainty. If the reduced rate is not extended, the price of gasoline and diesel could rise by 25‑30 cents per litre, increasing the cost of filling a 55‑litre tank from around €70 to near €90.

To offset these costs, households are turning to rooftop solar and battery storage. A case in Romania demonstrated that a €8,000 solar‑plus‑battery system can eliminate a €100‑monthly electricity bill, saving over €1,200 a year. In Spain, similar installations face higher upfront costs and regulatory hurdles, but they are being promoted as a way to achieve a “zero‑bill” outcome.
