Homey introduces centralized firmware updates for smart home devices

Homey has introduced a new ‘Device Updates’ feature designed to simplify the process of updating firmware for smart home devices. The update allows users to manage Matter, Z-Wave, and Zigbee devices directly through the Homey mobile or web applications, eliminating the need to use individual manufacturer apps for every component.

For Matter devices, Homey utilizes the Connectivity Standards Alliance’s Distributed Compliance Ledger to identify and deliver available firmware updates. For Z-Wave and Zigbee hardware, updates are managed via respective Homey apps, with availability contingent on specific developers and manufacturers.

Athom CEO Stefan Witkamp stated that the initiative aims to make the smart home more dependable by making the firmware update process more practical for both users and developers. Supported brands at launch include IKEA, Aeotec, INNR, Niko, Inovelli, Zooz, frient, ThirdReality, EcoDim, HeatIt, Namron, amina, CTM Lyng, and Nous.
