Homey smart home firmware and security updates

Overview

Homey, the smart home company owned by Athom, has focused on enhancing device security and management through firmware updates. Initially, the company released firmware version 13.4.1 to address a critical security vulnerability reported by an external researcher. While no evidence of exploitation was found, the update was issued for Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini, and self-hosted software to mitigate risks and resolve connection issues with Z-Wave and Matter protocols.

Following this, Homey introduced a centralized ‘Device Updates’ feature. This tool allows users to manage firmware for Matter, Z-Wave, and Zigbee devices directly through Homey’s mobile or web applications, reducing the reliance on individual manufacturer apps. Athom CEO Stefan Witkamp noted the initiative aims to make smart homes more dependable by streamlining the update process for users and developers. The feature launched with support for various brands, including IKEA, Aeotec, and INNR.
