Honda develops new sensor method for ADAS hand detection

Honda R&D is developing a new method to improve Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) by detecting whether a driver's hands are on the steering wheel. This technology aims to comply with strict UN/ECE safety regulations regarding Hands Off Detection.

To reduce production costs and prevent the wear and tear associated with traditional capacitive films on the steering wheel rim, Honda engineers have proposed moving the sensors to the control modules on the steering wheel spokes. This approach uses an indirect capacitive sensor integrated into existing button modules.

While this method is more cost-effective and durable, it presents engineering challenges. Sensors located within the button modules are more susceptible to environmental factors, such as temperature fluctuations and humidity, which can cause electrical drift and affect accuracy.
