Honda launches CB500 as part of expanded Indian motorcycle lineup
Honda used a conference in New Delhi to unveil a ten‑model range of new motorcycles and scooters built in India. The highlight was the retro‑styled CB500, a single‑cylinder 501 cc bike delivering 28 hp and 31.7 lb‑ft of torque, equipped with a five‑speed gearbox, dual‑channel ABS, spoked wheels and a slipper clutch with adjustable traction control. The model is positioned above Honda’s CB350 family and may fill the market gap left by Royal Enfield’s discontinued 500‑cc singles.
The launch reflects Honda’s strategy to broaden its presence in the Indian market, shifting from primarily utilitarian transport to a more leisure‑oriented two‑wheeler segment. Alongside the CB500, Honda introduced an electric QC3 scooter, the ADV160 that can run on up to E85 fuel, and incorporated its E‑Clutch technology on several models. Honda’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Mutsuo Usui, said Indian customers now seek products that match both lifestyle and mobility needs. Honda produces around 20 million two‑wheelers annually, with the Asian market accounting for about 85 % of global sales.
