Honduran citizens deceived into fighting in Ukraine war

Two Honduran men have reportedly been deceived by fraudulent job offers into fighting in the war in Ukraine on the Russian side.

Wilfredo Lemuel Medina, a 36-year-old from El Progreso, was allegedly recruited by Colombian intermediaries under the guise of working in a fishing harpoon factory. After traveling to Russian territory in April 2026, Medina was reportedly stripped of his belongings and forced to sign documents in Russian that he could not understand. His last contact with his family indicated he was being prepared for deployment to the Donbas region, specifically the Eastern Battalion; his current whereabouts are unknown.

Héctor Gabriel Sandoval, 31, was targeted through internet advertisements promising massive financial incentives. These offers included initial payments of over US$15,000, monthly salaries of approximately US$3,000, and substantial death or injury indemnities. These deceptive recruitment tactics exploit individuals facing severe economic hardships.
