Honduran coffee sector faces price pressure amid global supply shifts
The Honduran coffee sector is facing pressure due to falling international prices, a trend driven by expectations of a record harvest in Brazil. This increase in global supply has weakened market quotations, threatening the income of Honduran coffee-growing families.
Despite the price decline, Honduras expects to close the current cycle with an increase of approximately one million quintals compared to the previous year. This higher production volume is intended to offset lower prices, with estimates suggesting that coffee exports could generate an additional $200 million in foreign exchange compared to the last period.
Producer and exporter Emilio Medina noted that the price drop may be temporary. He suggested that adverse weather conditions and logistical complications in other producing regions could contract the global supply, potentially driving prices back up toward the $300 per quintal mark. Medina encouraged national producers to focus on improving yields per manzana to navigate the market volatility.
