Honduran coffee export growth and regulatory compliance

Overview

Honduras is experiencing a significant rise in coffee export volumes. Despite previous fluctuations in international grain prices, export volume grew by approximately 24%, with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock reporting 7.18 million quintals exported. Total export value is approaching record levels, with the current season having already generated over $2.4 billion in foreign exchange.

To maintain access to European markets, authorities launched the National Coffee Parcel Georeferencing Strategy. This collaboration between the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock, the Honduran Coffee Institute, and the Forest Conservation Institute aims to comply with European Union deforestation prevention regulations by georeferencing more than 400,000 manzanas of coffee.

Looking toward the 2026-2027 harvest, production is projected to potentially exceed 7.5 million bags. While Basilio Fuschich of ADECAFEH expects the current season to close at approximately 7.2 million bags, the sector is now facing pressure from falling international prices driven by expectations of a record harvest in Brazil.

Following the 2025-2026 harvest, preliminary data confirms that exports exceeded 7.3 million 46-kilogram bags, generating approximately $2.285 billion in foreign exchange, with the United States and Germany serving as major importers. Comayagua was identified as the leading department in production, while La Unión, Copán, recorded the highest productivity.

To support the industry, the National Coffee Fund (FCN) has invested L243.7 million to improve over 10,468 kilometers of the coffee road network across 15 departments. Additionally, the country is seeing growth in other agricultural exports, such as cardamom, which generates over $16 million in annual foreign exchange from an estimated 54,000 quintals destined for international markets.
