Honduran coffee export growth and regulatory compliance
Overview
Honduras is experiencing a significant rise in coffee export volumes. Despite an 11% decrease in average international grain prices, export volume grew by approximately 24%, with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock reporting 7.18 million quintals exported. Total export value is approaching a record $2.35 billion.
To maintain access to European markets, Honduran authorities have launched the National Coffee Parcel Georeferencing Strategy. This initiative, a collaboration between the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock, the Honduran Coffee Institute, and the Forest Conservation Institute, aims to comply with European Union deforestation prevention regulations. The strategy seeks to georeference more than 400,000 manzanas of coffee, benefiting over 120,000 producers through the generation of reliable geospatial data.
Looking ahead to the 2026-2027 harvest cycle, production is projected to potentially exceed 7.5 million bags. Basilio Fuschich, president of the Association of Coffee Exporters (ADECAFEH), stated that the current season is expected to close with approximately 7.2 million bags. While the current season has already generated over $2.4 billion in foreign exchange, future production levels depend heavily on weather patterns. Although mountainous shade-grown areas are in good condition, a lack of rainfall is impacting lower-altitude plantations, which experts warn could affect bean quality and weight.
