Honduran Farmers Face Massive Crop Losses Amid Severe Drought

A prolonged drought across Honduras' Dry Corridor has devastated agricultural output. In the municipalities of Lepaterique and Sabanagrande, producers report that maize and bean harvests have been completely lost, with investments of 25,000‑30,000 lempiras per farm wiped out and hundreds of families left without food or income. Producer Anastasio Núñez said, “Perdimos todo,” reflecting the depth of the crisis.

Grain producer groups have pressed the government for long‑term water‑management solutions. Tulio Medina, president of the Association of Producers of Grains (Prograno), criticized current contingency measures as inadequate and highlighted the abandonment of an irrigation system in El Paraíso that was built with international aid two decades ago. He called for technically qualified public officials and sustained strategies to secure water resources and protect agricultural production against climate change.
