Honduran government honors 100 Garifuna women for their contributions

More than 100 Garifuna women were recognized in Honduras for achievements in health, education, economics, social action, culture, art and sport. The ceremony was held on International Afro‑Latin, Afro‑Caribbean and Diaspora Women’s Day and brought together participants from five Honduran departments and representatives of five international delegations.

The event, organized by the Plataforma de Mujeres Garífunas de Éxito and led by its president Jade Martínez, was attended by officials of President Nasry Asfura’s administration. Presidential representative María Antonieta Mejía conveyed the president’s commitment to gender equality, respect and inclusion, while Semujer head Nolvia Herrera reaffirmed public policies that guarantee full participation of Afro‑descendant women.

Organizers highlighted that each honored story reflects collective progress, inspiring families, communities and the nation as a whole.
