Local residents and Ofraneh report that the production has disrupted fishing, water access, and turtle nesting. In response to the protests and displacement, the production company Mediaset moved contestants to a more inhospitable location in Laguna Cacao. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the situation, stating the treatment of the Garífuna people is ‘not right’ and emphasizing that economic activity in indigenous territories must adhere to legal regulations. In Tegucigalpa, protesters have established the ‘Campamento por la Vida del Pueblo Garífuna,’ also known as ‘Campamento Viva Berta,’ to protest extractivism and defend ancestral territories. The camp serves as a site for organized resistance, with protesters demanding the release of five territory defenders detained during the eviction of the San Juan community and calling for government compliance with four Inter-American Court of Human Rights rulings. Controversies regarding land ownership and state sovereignty are intensifying.
