Honduras government plans to purchase hospital to relieve Hospital Escuela

Honduran President Nasry Asfura has announced that the government is evaluating the purchase of an existing, fully equipped private hospital to alleviate the extreme saturation at the Hospital Escuela. The plan involves transferring outpatient services and emergency care to the new facility to reduce pressure on the country’s primary public hospital. In addition to this acquisition, the administration intends to remodel and equip the Hospital Escuela to improve its overall capacity.

Following this announcement, Odir Fernández, Rector of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), proposed that the university could manage and provide medical staff for the newly acquired hospital, citing the institution's existing human resources and historical experience in hospital administration.

These developments occur amid ongoing challenges in the national health system, including labor disputes and service suspensions by medical professionals. While the government reports that 95% of medical salaries have been paid, the medical union continues to demand improvements in working conditions and budget allocations. Furthermore, President Asfura announced plans to travel to Houston, USA, to inspect advanced technology for early cancer detection intended for the public health sector.
