Overview

The dispute between the Medical College of Honduras (CMH) and the government has intensified, impacting approximately 1.8 million people—roughly 18% of the population. Blanca Munguía, Health Director of the Association for a More Just Society (ASJ), reported that shortages in personnel, medications, supplies, equipment, and inadequate infrastructure are creating significant barriers to care. While President Nasry Asfura maintains his administration has fulfilled over 73% of salary commitments and has disbursed 420 million lempiras for benefits and severance, the CMH has escalated its demands. CMH President Samuel Santos is demanding the immediate payment of overdue salaries for 1,315 doctors, noting that some professionals could face up to nine months without remuneration. The union stated that previous government commitments to issue payments in March and May have not been honored.

As a result of the ongoing friction, medical professionals have held informative assemblies for five consecutive days, limiting their services strictly to emergency care. The CMH has also questioned the absence of the presidential mediation commission, led by Private Secretary Luis Castro, in current discussions. The ASJ continues to warn that the lack of agreement between the Ministry of Health and the CMH is forcing families to seek expensive private alternatives and is risking lives.
