Honduras medical strike ends following government agreement
The Colegio Médico de Honduras (CMH) has agreed to end its labor strike and resume medical consultations and surgeries. The decision follows an agreement with the government of President Nasry Asfura to establish an expanded technical table to resolve outstanding salary payments and contract issues affecting hundreds of professionals.
The agreement aims to accelerate the review of files for approximately 500 doctors, including 154 with pending contracts and 364 in interim positions. The expanded technical table will include representatives from the Secretariats of Health, Finance, Labor, and Civil Service, as well as the Presidency.
As a result of the prolonged strike, the Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa faces a significant backlog, requiring the rescheduling of over 20,000 medical appointments and 400 elective surgeries. Hospital authorities are considering extended hours and special medical brigades to address the accumulation of patients, noting that some procedures may be delayed until 2027.
