Honduran misinformation study shows 59% of political statements false

A monitoring report released by Honduras Verifica documented 413 false or misleading posts (bulos) shared on social media in Honduras between 1 January and 30 June 2026. The study verified 121 public statements, of which 103 were made by political actors.

Fact‑checking found that 60 of the 103 political statements—equating to 59 %—were classified as either false (43) or misleading (17). The breakdown by party shows 52 statements from the Libertad y Refundación (Libre) party, 32 from the Partido Nacional and 19 from the Partido Liberal, with false verdicts distributed across all three. Only nine statements were judged true, about 9 % of those examined.

The report also identified 201 distinct sources of disinformation, but just ten accounts generated 21.5 % of the recorded bulos; the account NoticiasDigitalHN was the most active with 39 cases. Researchers warned that the use of artificial intelligence to spread false content is growing, further complicating efforts to maintain democratic resilience.
