Honduran poultry sector reports losses exceeding 6 million lempiras

The Honduran poultry sector has reported losses exceeding 6 million lempiras due to avian influenza outbreaks and economic pressures. The disease has been detected in wild birds, backyard poultry, and at least one commercial farm, prompting increased surveillance by the National Service of Agricultural Health and Food Safety (Senasa).

Beyond the health crisis, producers are facing challenges related to drought and difficulties accessing financing. The industry is also navigating price volatility, particularly regarding eggs. In response, the government and producers recently established reference prices to manage cost structures.

Despite these setbacks, the Federation of Poultry Farmers of Honduras (Fedavih) stated that national supply remains secure. Honduras consumes approximately 2 million eggs and over 400 million pounds of chicken meat annually. Fedavih is also working to expand export opportunities, noting that three out of four planned regional markets are currently available, while Guatemala remains pending.
