Honduran President Asfura Announces Surge in Public Surgeries and First Nationwide Drug Procurement

President Nasry Asfura said Honduras' health trust, administered with Banco de Occidente, will enter an operational phase that dramatically expands surgeries in public hospitals and secures a first national tender for medicines. To date, 227 surgeries have been performed under the scheme, and Asfura pledged that “in the near future you will see a much higher flow of operations nationwide.” He highlighted progress in the Bay Islands, where surgical backlogs have markedly declined.

The trust also completed its inaugural national drug procurement to improve supply and distribution across hospitals and health centers. In parallel, Asfura reaffirmed support for the International Commission Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (CICIH) and announced internal anti‑corruption measures, including transferring the Transparency Secretariat to the Attorney General’s Office and doubling the budget of the Supreme Audit Court.
